J. R. Ackerley himself is not particularly winsome (think fussy old bachelor), but because we had a beloved German Shepherd (Alsatian), I couldn't help but appreciate Tulip herself. More defecation and reproduction information than is to my taste, but fascinating anyway. Ackerley gives us insights into the mind and body of a dog that we don't get elsewhere. But if you're looking for a memoir of a lovable dog that gets into lots of great scrapes, you'll have to keep looking. I'm glad I read it.
