Tiny Ladies is a gripping, painful book. It starts off a bit slow, but don't be discouraged; when it picks up, it really picks up. The story forces the reader to confront the ugliness of life in varying levels of severity; heartbreak, addiction, and death are all among the subjects probed. At times, the plot narrowly avoids falling into melodrama, and Klein's highly poetic writing style is sometimes difficult to comprehend. Still, the story was compelling enough to consistently hold my interest until the hopeful (but not unrealistically optimistic) ending.
