Set in Australia in the 1920s, this is an exceptionally good book that poses questions about honor, commitment and love. Tom Sherburne is a war veteran employed as a lighthouse keeper in a remote, isolated island location when he meets his future wife, Isabel. Deeply in love, they live alone on Janus island where they plan to raise a houseful of children. This plan turns to despair after a number of miscarriages. When fate intervenes, they are faced with a multi-layered moral dilemma that eventually threatens to destroy their hard-won happiness, as well as the lives of other people. I eagerly await Ms. Stedman's next books.
