It is 1763 and Alec Halsey, a career diplomat, is back home after an 8-month stint in service of his country in Paris. He arrives to find that his brother has killed his own friend in a duel and the woman Alec planned to marry is engaged to his brother. To say the brothers are estranged is an understatement. Then, during the engagement house party, the betrothed lady's maid is murdered and she is attacked.

I doubt I've ever read a Georgian historical mystery before. It is interesting to solve a murder without CSI -- or its like. However, bodies drop with alarming regularity and everyone seems to discuss everyone else's peccadillos with abandon. Still, it was an interesting story. I plan to try another before giving up on the genre entirely.
