This is the third and last book in The Golden Gate Chronicles, which is an outstanding series. I especially enjoyed this last novel, which can be read as a stand alone, if you happen to only have this one. The setting is 1908-1909 San Francisco subsequent to the earthquake of 1906 and its aftermath of rebuilding, finance and politics. In Chinatown, it was a time of violence and slavery of young Chinese girls brought in for the purpose of prostitution. Much of the story focuses on the rescue and care of some of these young girls.

Charles, the hero of Through the Shadows, turns out to be much stronger than he first appears and it is exciting to follow his career as a young lawyer. Elizabeth has her own problems to work through, but I love the way she finally comes to understand the redemptive work and grace of her Savior, Jesus Christ.

This is a wonderful historic romance. If you like a good story with interesting characters and causes, I highly recommend this book.
