To a degree I was very surprised. I would not expect a defence of military service in this day and age. When my son signed up for the Army I was hurt. Not because of the military service, but THE ARMY. My dad and sister spent 20+ years in the Air Force. My mother on the other hand reflected our society in general, she was going to break both his legs. She did not want any of her grandchildren in the military. This book shows the fallacy of such a position. If we as a society desire a military then all should participate in the military. The military should not be a place that the society see those that could not 'make it' in the private sector. This position was reflected by John Kerry when he said that if you go to school and make good grades you can go into business and make good money otherwise you go into the military. This book points out that we are becoming a three tier society, the elite, the populace, and the military. Each is suspicious of the other. Well written, well developed, and easy to read.
