I used to think Romeo and Juliet was my favorite among the Shakespeares - but this play really had me at the edge of my seat during the trial. You keep on saying to yourself: Really! Is he going to die???
Unfortunately, anti-semitism, money and maybe even greed should be added to the tag lines. As great a playwright as Shakespeare was, it was a little difficult to overcome the anti-semitism. Perhaps Shakespeare did this to illuminate that one's enemies could be one's creation more than anything else.
Additionally, I don't think money was at the center of Shylock's universe. Unfortunately, I think it was the only thing left...
