Before being reprinted, this was an uncommon book.
"Oh it's good to eat after several days of nothing but worry, and good to know that in the morning I will go to the jail across the bridge, no problem with the nickel toll; I will probably even ignore the tollkeeper as I pass and hitch the baby higher on my hip, and buy peaches for Ray, enormous ones that make a whole meal for our shrunken stomachs, and sit square down on the sidewalk between the courthouse and Ray's jail window, almost hidden by trees as if by bars mesh of superfluous shadowing, sit there and eat the peach I have saved from Ray's and know that he is watching and know that his watching makes me hotter than any Laredo sun, the baby cooing among the grass roots of courthouse sprinkler lawn."
