I had to stop reading this book about halfway through because I did not know what was going on. It was as if the story began in the middle and I missed the first part. And maybe that's exactly what happened. One of the reviewers said that readers needed to read the first book about Sugar in order to understand This Bitter Earth; but I did not know there was a Book 1 when I bought it. Bernice L. McFadden is a very good writer and I was impressed by the way she tells a story, but I do need to know what came before in order to fully appreciate her talent.
