I mostly liked this prequel, which sort of shows how Hutch got to be the steely-nerved captain she is in later books. Quite a lot of the book is spent with Hutch in an office after having made some poor decisions. There's a series of flights where something goes wrong that shouldn't, and only desperate measures by the crew gets (almost) everyone out in time. About half the book is shown from the POV of her mentor - I didn't get a lot out of him. It's definitely not as action packed as most of this series, but it works, and if you haven't read any of them before this will work just fine as a beginning point.
