Mimi Olsen, a telemedium (seriously!) has gotten to the age of forty just cruisin' along in life, with no goals, cares, commitments or responsibilities. And that's just the way she likes it ..... or so she thought. But then her family's summer compound on the shores of a lake in northern Minnesota (called "Chez Ducky"), is threatened by devleopment and increasing land values.
And after losing her swimsuit while skinny dipping, she hides - naked and mud-covered - in the back of Joe Tierney's car. Joe - a very spiffy, buttoned-down, goal-oriented businessman - has come to the lake to visit his estranged twenty-something son. Mimi is NOTHING like the women he usually dates, but he finds himself oddly attracted to her.
Fast forward to the next winter ..... Mimi comes back to the Chez Ducky compound for a winter visit. While she is there, she witnesses Joe's son fall into an unfinished swimming pool and break his leg. He can neither take care of himself, nor his three dogs. Suddenly Mimi, who has avoided responsibilities her whole life, has plenty of them. And then Joe hears about his son's acciident, and comes to visit ............
Skinny Dipping took three weeks for me to read, but that was more a function of the crazyness of my job than the book. It was somewhat easy to put down, but I always felt compelled to pick it up again. It's much more than a "simple" romance novel, with the focus more on the evolution of both Mimi and Joe's lives than their romance. There are large elements of farce also that really added the funny to this book.
