Read this for the October pick in my online book club, The Reading Cove. I enjoyed it. It was a realistic story about Shay Dixon suffering through a painful childhood and her journey to being able to forgive her mother for it.
I think I enjoyed the Lifetime movie more since it was more concise and left a few things out that weren't missed. Like Shay's visions of Nina Simone. But I can understand the way she turned to the great female jazz singers as pseudo-mother figures.
A very good read overall.
