Despite the plot of the series seeming to actually take off here, this is my least favorite book in the series. The first two books each focused closely on a single character, self-revelation, the development of power, interspecies relationships, and exploring the awesome fantasy world. This third book, perhaps because the main character is an exiled(?) prince fighting for his throne, is more about political intrigue, covering multiple subplots and character POV's. It was hard to connect with Freelorn, the main character. The chance to see more of the previous books' main characters became my only interest here.
