This was one of my favorite books ever! The enigmatic Benedict Arnold inspires the inexperienced continental army to great feats and perhaps protects the hopes of the emerging nation.

Yes, you heard it, praise for Arnold. Peter and Nathan Merrill come of age during this turbulent time and join the Continental Army under Steven Nason and Cap'n Huff in order to prove their loyalty to their neighbors and the cause. Rabble in Arms is an account of the northern army and its efforts to keep the redcoats from dividing the colonies in half and thus extinguishing the 'rebellion'. It's primarily written as a first person narrative from Peter Merrill and his experiences in the service of the Continental Army as a scout for Arnold.

You'll remember Steven and Cap'n Huff from the equally impressive novel Arundel and you'll meet a few other characters from that tale in Rabble in Arms too. It's amazing what a person can endure when hope, love and the belief in a cause are strong enough. Truly a tale of our American independence and it's unique birth from a group of rabble.
