Charles Honeybath, well-known portrait artist, has plunked down a substantial sum to secure a place in a home for affluent elderly folk. Repeat visits to check it out give him pause; there seem to be rather a lot of "eccentrics" about. When the opportunity arises to help himself while helping distressed fellow artist, Edwin Lightfoot, Honeybath gives up his place willingly. It wasn't such a great good deed; Lightfoot is murdered in a particularly bizarre way and Honeybath feels very guilty. As one newspaper reviewer put it, this is top-notch suspense that moves easily between humor and horror.
