I am a fan of Magdalen Nabb's mystery series set in Florence, Italy. Some find this series too "quiet" as Marshall Guarnaccia of the carabinieri tends to be quiet, introspective, unsure, and insecure. I find it an interesting character study of the characters. This book, in particular, is a fascinating story of a Contessa/dress designer in Florence who is thought to be wealthy. Her captivity in the Tuscan hills is intertwined with the police search, the political ramifications of wealthy kidnapping in Italy, and the actions of her 2 grown children. Guarnaccia is the quiet center of this story. This book could be a stand alone, but reading more of the series gives depth and background to the main character. I really enjoyed this book.
