My daughter read Holes and loved it. I then read it and also loved it. The movie, of course, is not as good as the book. I gave Holes 5 stars. Small Steps is a pseudo-sequel. It contains two of the characters from Holes (Armpit ans X-Ray). However, the writing is simply not as good. It doesn't hold your attention like Holes. It's still a decent read, but a bit disappointing compared to Holes.
