I'm not a big fan of "coffee table" books, as they take up too much room and, despite this, often don't cover its subject with enough detail. This book is different even though it is loaded with color photographs, often taking up entire pages.
The author discusses the early history of passenger air travel and its problems. Then he discusses the development of the DC-1, 2 and 3. All the while making it interesting reading. The three Douglas models changed the way people flew. They established a standard for not only commercial air travel, but also for military use.
Thank God for these aircraft, as they helped us win World War II in every theater in which they were used. Plus, they were essential during the late 1940s Berlin airlift. If not for them and the men who flew them, Europe, perhaps the world, might be a very different place today. The author even gives us a few pages and photographs of their use in the movies, several of which I have seen.
The aircraft and their later models were still in use around the world many decades after World War II. In fact, they are still flying. Some of our inventions, like the wheel and these planes, never go out of style. Why stop using a good thing?
