

McMurtry has taken on an almost impossible task here -- to write the biography of a man about whom almost nothing can be definitively proven. He does the best he can by including what little has been provided by first-hand sources at the time and weaving it into a framework of the general conditions of life for the Sioux Indians in the mid 19th century.
