If you read enough books on the Civil War, you begin to understand what the common infantryman went through in training, marching, fighting and disbanding. You know then what they wore and what they ate, how they were organized and what their duties were. You also learn how they handled death, of their friends and enemies, and the comedies and gruesome tragedies of their varied experiences.

If you don't want to read all those books, you can just read this one, as it delivers a capsule exposure to all those experiences.

And perhaps, hopefully it will lead you to read more stories about them in the thousands of Civil War books available.
