As a Viet Nam vet myself, I seldom read books on that war. However, this one was recommended to me so I gave it a try.

Within the first few pages I felt like I was back in that era and getting off the plane in Da Nang. Gwin's writing actually makes you feel like you are walking along side him. I wasn't in the infantry, I ran resupply convoys to combat bases, but Gwin made me feel as if I was a grunt.

This is an outstanding memoir of a difficult time in American history. When I went to Viet Nam as a young Marine lieutenant, I was prepared to die for Vietnamese freedom and to defeat the Communists. My experiences slowly convinced me that we were in the wrong war at the wrong time. By the end of my time in-country, I had one all consuming purpose - getting myself and my men home in one piece.
