As a longtime fan of the show Destination Truth, I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive about reading this memoir from the show's host. Okay, I am kidding no one, I was the fan who waiting for the premiere of the show for a month and have refused to miss a single episode since so we'll call me a dedicated fan of the show. Honestly, as much as I love Josh Gates as the host of the show itself, I wasn't quite sure what I found discover about him as a writer. The two things are very different venues and it made me nervous.
However, I really liked this memoir a lot. It was witty, fun, adventurous, and sarcastically funny. These are all the same things that I love about Josh Gates on the show and they translated perfectly into print as well. He brings his adventures to life honestly and makes you feel as though you were actually there with him. More than once my jaw dropped to the floor as I read stories of him being put in physical danger for the sake of the show (for example, having the roof of a plane fly off in mid flight in Russia or having machine guns pointed at his face when his team unwittingly crossed a border to the wrong country). And there were funny moments too, like when Josh decribes the fact that in Egypt if someone appears to be trying to be helpful you should check your pocket for your wallet, but that he nevertheless loves the country for the very fact that they are shameless about ripping off tourists.
I could go on since there are many other reasons I liked this book, but I will just say that not only should every fan of the show read this book, but fans of traveling the world should as well. Even if you are the type of traveler that only gets as far as the Travel Channel, you will love it. I give this a well deserved 4.5 stars.
