A fan of John Masters since I discovered his autobiographic trilogy of his service as an officer in the British Indian Army and his experiences in World War II, I have also enjoyed his novels. This novel is part of his fictional history of the Savage family. I found the others more enjoyable than this one, but that may be because I am not a fan of mountaineering.

Peter Savage, the 'hero' of this novel, is a man possessed with facing challenges and emerging on top, no matter how many lives he may destroy in his quest. How he eventually comes to the realization that there is more to life than 'being the best,' is a long process which those who love him, and even those who hate him, contribute to.
