A fan of John Masters since I discovered his autobiographic trilogy of his service as an officer in the British Indian Army and his experiences in World War II, I have also enjoyed his novels. This novel is part of his fictional history of the Savage family. I found the others more enjoyable than this one, but that may be because I am not a fan of mountaineering.
Peter Savage, the 'hero' of this novel, is a man possessed with facing challenges and emerging on top, no matter how many lives he may destroy in his quest.
