After 18 years of marriage, building a successful busines and a happy family near San Francisco on Hope Street, everything changes in a instant on Christmas Day for Liz Sutherland. Her husband, Jack, is killed while on a 5 minute errand. Liz must console 5 devastated children, one with special needs. Liz goes back to work and must become both mother and father. An accident sends her oldest son to the hospital and brings Dr. Bill Webster into her life. Bill slowly becomes a friend and helps to heal her shattered son. With the first anniversay of Jack's live, Liz finds a new relationship that offers hope and Liz reflects on the little blessings that give strength when nothing else is left. But she will had to face one more crisis before she can look ahead to a new life.
