Although I'd rather have a root canal rather than attend a baseball game, I was fascinated by the history of baseball as told by Stef Ann Holm. With all the precautions in place today, it is hard to imagine an accident like the one described in the opening pages of this book. Yet, I am sure they occurred in the early days of baseball.

It says something about Holm's imagination to think of having a female manager of an American Baseball League team (or any other major league team). According to my research, such a thing did not happen until 2009! I felt that the author was torn by dual interests -- the history of early baseball and the romance between Alex Cordova and Camille Kennison.

I didn't feel that this was nearly as interesting a story as either of the previous tales in this series (see below). It did not feel as if I was put off by the baseball story, In fact, I thought it was much more interesting than the romantic part. However, that is just my humble opinion. 3.5 stars
