Carla Neggers' new book Night Scents falls beautifully into the romance genre, but the element of surprise is her captivating knack for suspense, mystery, and drama. She is like an orchestra maestro, driving through a complex work that is sure to incite the most sedate audience to a full range of emotions. From soft sighs of love to intense moments of anxiety, Night Scents is a terrific treat. So what is it that makes this book so enjoyable? Well, tossing a Cape Cod heroine into a romantic situation with a wealthy southern gentleman from Tennessee is a great start, especially when our hero is less gentleman and more rogue. Our heroine, Piper, is a glutton for punishment, going on wild goose chases for her eccentric old aunt in the middle of the night in the hero's backyard. Add to this mix some treasure and a couple of threats. Well, you almost have the makings of a new Agatha Christie mystery. Of course, the romantic encounters between Piper and her Clate are very nearly inspirational. The pace is fast. Emotions fly throughout the story, dragging the reader along for the chaotic ride. In the end, you'll wonder whether you were reading a romance or a mystery, but that is the beauty of Carla's style. This is no bodice-ripper, and I would even say the passion is not of the barn-burning kind. However, the intensity of new love is there, as well as the seductive smiles and smoky bedroom eyes. I salute Night Scents as an innovation and a thrill.Fast...fun...and furious! Is it a mystery with a touch of romance, or a romance with a fist full of mystery? Carla Neggars is spell-binding. Witches, dreams, treasure...all bundled up in a neat love story. Witty and dramatic. Night Scents is like a torrential downpour of attitude.
