Book Review of Ugly Ways

Ugly Ways
Ugly Ways
Author: Tina McElroy Ansa
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Book Type: Paperback

This story tells the tale of Betty,Emily, and Annie Ruth-reunited of the occasion of their mothers death. In life,Mudear(a contraction of mother and dear) ruled her house and raised her daughters with an iron hand. Selfish and manipulative are words used to describe Mudear and emotionally scarred daughters had a love-hate relationship with her. As the Lovejoys prepare for her funeral, Mudear's spirit hovers over them, complaining about her daughters "ugly ways" in death as she did in life.
Ugly Ways challenges the stereotypical image of the African-American mother as a superwoman of unlimited compassion, wisdom, and strength. Never sentimemtal, this book sensitively explores the past but affirms the present.
