With spring's arrival in the Tennessee hills, Griffin Reed, widowed rector of Avenelo, is anxious to shed the pall that has cloaked his beloved campus. Despite the annual interparish quarreling, the upcoming commmunity-wide Easter celebration promises to restore a sense of normalcy to the quaint university he serves.

Father Grif's hope is shattered, however, when the body of a seminary friend is found in a neighboring Amish settlement-- hanging f4rom a legendary oak tree. Reluctantly drawn into the investigation. Father Grif's struggles to rmain objective in ther face of his young curate's blossoming relationship with an Amish womand and his spinster sister's too-suave new suitor. While the police seem to be stymied , Grif's suspicions reveal an assortment of suspects as he battles to bring the power of faith to bear in his quest for justice.
