I found this book at a discard sale ( it's perfect condition--can you imagine throwing books away?)and picked it up. It is a TREASURE. It takes place in the south when a dime could buy a shave and hair cuts fifteen cents, white bean suppers were planned entertainment and a night out with the neighbors. An orange for x-mas and two walnuts were a extravagant x-mas gift to recieve when your folks had nothing. It is very well written and so right on the nose. Life was so hard then when jobs were no where to be found, but people took care of each other and even through hardships, life was so beautiful then as the family stuck together. It is such a wonderful read. If you are from this time then you will enjoy and remember, if you are younger then you will enjoy learning. This is a perfect curl up with a book read. With lessons of times past in the hills and food scarse, lots of children, and clothes were not needed to to make a personality statement, it was the heart and reputation people knew. It is sad, funny and there is alot of family love. You will also see life thru Duny Gene and Hoadies eyes. (children from different sides of the hills)--hills don't matter!! Surviving does. Beautiful read to the end.
