I received this ARC copy direct from the publisher as part of a Goodreads giveaway. The publisher encouraged me to share my review of the book so here goes.
Basically, the novel was a blend of science fiction, horror, and conspiracy theories. It was about a new subway system being built under the Hudson River connecting New Jersey with New York City. The system has a state of the art pavilion located underneath the river and this is where most of the story takes place. It's opening day for the subway and both the mayor of New York and the President along with many guests are in the pavilion awaiting the arrival of the first subway "Z" train to enter the tunnel from New Jersey and arrive at the pavilion. But when the train arrives, it is decimated and filled with blood and gore. So what happened? Was it a terrorist attack? Well no, it was attacked by these strange superhuman creatures that live deep underground! So what are these creatures and how can the survivors in the pavilion overcome them? It turns out that a couple of the survivors actually work for a nefarious organization called the Foundation for Human Advancement who knew about the creatures and have supposedly been protecting humans from them for years. Well can our group make it out through the tunnels? And why do the creatures seem to want pregnant females?
Overall, I thought this one was pretty cliched. It included elements from a lot of different sources. The creatures reminded me of the creatures from "Alien". The plot was somewhat similar to the novel "Relic" and it even included a James Bond type supervillian as the head of the Foundation! The story shifted back and forth between different groups trying to rescue the survivors and the survivors trying to escape. Character development was pretty lax with most of the book focused on action. I think this would probably make a pretty good action movie starring Dwayne Johnson but for a book, I was hoping it would hurry up and finish!
