Bella is a cardboard cut-out of a girl whose main interests seem to be mooning away over her creepy boyfriend and cooking and cleaning for her all-but-absent father. For a girl who's been entirely set adrift by the adults in her life, she has surprisingly little emotional intensity. Instead, she falls for the vampire kid who shares her desk in science class and proceeds down the path to a typical (and poorly written) "star-crossed" romance. Neither Bella nor Edward are written with any depth, while the villains of the story remain much more interesting (although this is a tepid endorsement, at best). Please, could we have a teen heroine with some gumption and personality (not to mention depth of character)?
