The story begins with some biting, sardonic humor, somewhat in the vein of Defoe. This tapers off gradually. Thus the tone of the story matures as its hero does. But, rogue though our hero is, he is no Captain Jack fortunately ending his ignominious career at a much earlier age. As this is typical Collins, he inserts a new element of mystery as each is disclosed. A must read for any Collins aficionado.
