I'm usually a fan of Roberta Gellis, but this one didn't do much for me. I can't help but wonder if at least partly it's because it was written in 1964, when romances were written a bit differently.
I found Elizabeth, the female lead, somewhat unsympathetic with her self admitted shrewish ways. Roger, the male lead was better, but no real prize either. I would almost call it more straight up historical fiction with a strong romantic sub plot, looked at in that way, it's not a bad read.
As always with Gellis, excellent and accurate period detail and settings.
