I picked this novel because of the title. I laughed out loud when I saw it and could not wait to get my hands on it to start reading. I was hoping for a nice, funny zombie book. Unfortunately, that's not what I got. The good thing is, the book is still entertaining. It's just not really funny.
Summary:
Unfortunately for Jake, he has just consumed his best friend and several of his classmates in the cafeteria at school. Now he has woken up with a stomach ache, and the girl of his dreams as his new best friend. Amanda, the best looking cheerleader Jake has ever seen, is also now a zombie. The two of them team up and attempt to survive as the government hunts them.
Meanwhile, Cass, a teenage government psychic zombie-hunter, can see what happens just before someone dies. While she is on the hunt, she finds out that the government is conducting experiments that are simply immoral. Now she has to question if she is really on the "right" side.
My thoughts:
In spite of the AWFUL ending (AWFUL! AWFUL! AWFUL!), I liked this novel. As mentioned, it was not funny. Each character has quirks and Jake it probably the funniest, but even then, it is mostly just normal teenage sarcasm/wit. The story is told from two points of view: Jake and Cass. Jake's POV is the best. I love how likeable he is. While there are definitely icky scenes, the human part of Jake is someone to root for. Amanda is also likeable. We see her mainly through Jake's eyes and it is clear that he likes her. That obviously tints our view of her, but she shows signs of a real person (zombie) rather than a stuck-up popular girl. Cass's point of view is not nearly as enjoyable. She is not important until later in the novel. While Cass becomes a more interesting character as the story goes along, she does not have the charm that our zombie couple has. Jake and Amanda's relationship growing, in between some blood and brains, is very cute. The story is far more of a teen romance than any other genre, which may be why I think I liked the story even though it wasn't what I expected. How can someone resist adorable teen romance (without sex)?
