Fourth in the series with rancher Shirley McClintock. I really like Shirley, with her irascibility, tendency to lecture, and take-no-prisoners attitude. There's a nice convoluted story here, with a number of plotlines that the reader knows - and Shirley knows - have to be connected somehow. Why is April's father more interested in possible Anasazi pots in a cave than in April's death? Where is the newborn son of the housekeeper, and how can it be that another newborn boy was kidnapped right out of the hospital? Nice sense of place too. It's an older series, worth reading in order although not critical.
BTW for those who don't know it, B.J. Oliphant was really Sheri S. Tepper, who also wrote another mystery series as A.J. Orde, and a couple horror novels as E.E. Horlak.
