From the back of the book:

November 1196. With the county of Devon ravaged by an outbreak of the 'yellow plague", Sir John de Wolfe, the county coroner, finds himself stretched to breaking point - particularly when his brother, William is struck down by the disease at the family manor in Stoke-in-Teignhead.

And that's before Exeter is rocked by a series of brutal murders which appears to be linked to a revival of heresy in the city.

When some of the cathedral canons begin a crusade against this danger to the church, Sir John finds himself accused of sympathizing with the heretics, bringing him into dangerous conflict with the ecclesiastical authorities. As the situation worsens, the coroner is forced to take desperate measures in order to save his skin. Can Sir John survive long enough to unmask the real killer?
