Larkin Bennett returns from a tour in Afghanistan a broken women after her best friend is killed in action. Larkin is suffering from PTSD. While going through her friends things left behind, she comes across a diary written by Emily, an ancestor of Sarah. Emily served as a soldier in the Civil War, disguising herself as a man. The story goes between the two women's stories and their paths are intertwined. A wonderful look at the women who served in the Civil War undetected and the struggles they faced. I hated to see the book end. I wanted more of Emily's story!
