Having not read the previous two in the series, this is the first I'm learning about the improper princesses. There were all kinds of romantic possibilities with a young governess accepting a position in a male household. And for the most part, the secrets, past sorrows, bad blood between brothers, and mutual attraction between Victoria and Nick moved the story along swimmingly. But when Victoria's past caught up to her in Scotland, the tale lost its luster. The sequence of events in the final quarter were borderline outrageous and out of the blue as if to keep the reader engaged, but to me the drama was annoying and felt forced. Most disappointing was that Victoria and Nick, who up to now, had all kinds of warm and fuzzy connection going on, suddenly morphed into one-dimensional characters and became bystanders to the unsatisfying drama that unfolded. 3.5 stars.
