Recovering from the wreck of her marriage to the incompetent son of a great Hollywood star, Alice, a would-be screenwriter working as a show-biz columnist for a lesser Los Angeles paper, bounces between supercharged sexual olympics with a married director and an impossibly sensitive soon-to-be lawyer/stand-up comic.

First-time novelist Lewis's myriad characters are all Hollywood novel cliches, but she makes them fresh and funny. Lewis skewers Hollywood with a savage, savvy wit that begs comparison with Evelyn Waugh and Terry Southern. Her tale of a "thirtysomething," Catholic-raised woman who must lose everything in order to gain herself is unexpectedly wise and observant.

The British-born Lewis is a wonderfully quirky actress (having starred in such films as The Fearless Vampire Killers) and, surprisingly, an even better writer.
