Thirteen year old Elizabeth Talbot first meets White Arrow in the American west. Indian girls taunt White Arrow while he is tied to the stake for having killed an Indian chief's son, and Beth stops them from being so cruel. Scottish laird, Red Mackinnon intervenes and trades for his son's life. White Arrow tells Beth if they ever meet again, if she needs his help, he will be there for her. Five years later, Beth's uncle Percy tries to marry her off to Trowbridge, the earl of Croydon, but Beth refuses to cooperate. She is secretly writing pamphlets supporting Queen Charlotte while Percy aspires to become titled, so he plots with Croydon to murder the Queen. Percy takes Beth to Skye to marry Red as he is also involved with the murder plot. Red, appalled by her appearance, rejects Beth but suggests to Fletcher, who arrives with two prostitutes, that they trade ladies. Beth recalls the handsome Lakota Indian and his promise of help, so she asks him to marry her, with the understanding that they will have the marriage annulled the next day. A man says the words, and they are married, but they sign no papers. One night after a party, they make love and the next day Beth learns that the man who performed their wedding is not a minister and therefore they are not legally married. Later, in a drunken stupor, Red falls from the battlements and dies. A note is found with a dagger through his chest that implicates Queen Caroline. Fletcher's heritage demands revenge for his father's death and he goes to London to learn the truth, and if necessary, to kill the Queen. Beth also goes to England and she arranges a meeting between Caroline and Fletcher who realizes the Queen is not involved in his father's murder. He gives the Queen some herbs and she suddenly dies the next day. Due to Percy's scheming, Fletcher is suspected as the assassin and Beth is taken to the Tower. When he learns what has happened, Fletcher kills Percy in self defense then goes to the Tower to save Beth. She finds a letter that incriminates Percy and Trowbridge, but will it be enough to keep Fletcher from the gallows, if she gets there on time? Fletcher is to be executed in the morning, but Beth has gone through too much to lose him now; and there is more than just the two of them at stake. Skye Lakota is pleasurable reading! A new and innovative storyline, strong characters and tense romance! A very different premise of one man's struggle to be accepted make this book an interesting read!
