He was being overprotective...

Maura was determined to strike out on her own. Her decision to teach school enraged Clayton, her stepbrother, and the administrator of the family's considerable wealth.

Ten years older than Maura, Clayton had always shared an affectioinate relationship with her. He'd respected her intelligence and recognized her independent spirit.
