Nancy Schultz heard the shot, then the scream. She looked out the front door. A man pointed a .38 through the open window of his Town Car. Her husband lay on the ground. A 2nd shot. A third--this one fire, execution style, into her husband's back.
Random urban violence?
Hardly. The scene is an 800-acre Main Line Philadelphia estate. The victim is Dave Schultz, and Olympic gold medalist wrestler. The shooter is John E. du Pont, heir to the chemical fortune.
He is rich. Rich enough to get away w/ behavior that would land any working stiff in a psych ward or a prison cell. He complained that the geese in his pond were spying on him. He stalked the grounds of his estate armed w/ automatic weaponds. He played tank jockey in his own armored personnel carrier. Dressed in an orange jumpsuit, he often claimed to be the Dalai Lama.
But du Pont was also a volunteer cop who flew his own helicopter on police rescue missions. Obsessivel passionate about sports, he transformed a part of his estate into a world-class camp for wrestlers. It was here that Schult & other athletes of his caliber lived & trained on du Pont's tab.
Psychological journalist Carol A. Turkington reveals the exclusive firsthand story of the du Pont heir, from his pampered but emotionally barren childhood, through his painful development as an athletic wanna be, to his spiral into the delusional frenzy that culminated in the murder of an Olympic champion, husband, & father.
No Holds Barred: The Strange Life of John E. du Pont is an investigation into the darkest reccesses of human emotion, of human relationships, and of everything money can & cannot buy. It is an American tragedy, written from the persepctive of those who were shattered by it.
