Longarm follows the trail of 3 bank robbers to the lawless town of Whiskey Creek. He meets the widow of the town's last marshal and spends some, um, quality time with her. An eager young lawman shows up with a burning desire to clean up the town. Longarm deputizes the young man and finally gets down to fulfilling his mission.
There's a whole side story about the young deputy owlhoot and his efforts to bring order to Whiskey Creek. Although it's an interesting side story, it drags on too long and distracts from the usual Longarm adventure typical of this series.
Longarm without Longarm just isn't Longarm.
When he does catch up to the bank robbers and returns to Whiskey Creek, he deals with the aftermath of the deputy's presence and the story ties up rather quickly.
