As with the first two books, the author spins a good tale, though it is very run-of-the-mill fantasy. It's entertaining -- the target audience is young adult, but anyone who enjoys fantasy will probably like this.

I'm not a huge fan of the books, though. Two specific things about these books I don't like center around the characters. First, there doesn't seem to be much personality difference between the characters. Second, there are annoying inconsitencies with most of the characters. For example, an all-knowing, all-wise elf will be a veritable fount of knowledge in one chapter, then in the next she is stunned when Eragon "discovers" something in the forest where this elf has lived for centuries. It doesn't hurt the story too much, but I did find it annoying.
