This is a lovely story about a young girl experiencing immigration and significant travel to Utah in 1856. I've read many books about overland travel in America's early years. However, this is the first time I read about people pulling their carts for more than 1000 miles. This story tells a true story about Mormons traveling to Utah. Because their family started late, they faced freezing weather, frostbite, and starvation. This story is powerful because the author invites readers to be part of the journey. The illustrations were excellent and helped tell the story. When I saw the farmers tugging their wagons along, the difficulty of their trip hit me. This is a remarkable story for elementary and middle school children because the illustrations reinforce the text about their desperate struggle.
