This book is essential for understanding "the mind of the South" as Cash entitled his book about Dixie history and sociology. Lillian Smith was a brilliant recluse who wrote movingly and unerringly about the Southern history of class, race, and gender prejudices which have directly contributed to today's political land scape. A must-read for historians and political junkies! And more easily readable than Cash, IMO.
