Sara had been thrown into Fleet prison when her father died with massive debts. She had little hope of ever getting out, except to be sent to the brothels. Then she received a marriage proposal from Lord Nicholas Walraven, which was strange enough. But the marriage had to carried out by proxy. Lord Walraven would not attend!
Sara is even more surprised when she meets her new husband. He is extremely handsome and rich. With all that plus his title and he should have no trouble obtaining any woman he wished to marry. There was certainly no reason for him to buy a bride out of prison.
But Nicholas treats Sara coldly and informs her that their's will be a marriage in name only. She will have his name, his title, his wealth, and the freedom to discreetly take a lover.
Sara is surprised and angered, by all this. She doesn't want a lover, she wants her charismatic husband with the shadow of tragedy in his black eyes. What can be the secret he hides so completely?
I thought the heroine of this book was not very bright. She is constantly getting herself into trouble and listens to no one.
Also, I did not buy it expecting a paranormal story, but that is what it is.
