I read Private Down Under, the first Private novel set in Australia, a few months ago and was somewhat disappointed with it because it felt like the novel could have been set anywhere with little or no actual references to Australia and its culture. However, in this latest Private novel, Patterson uses Kathryn Fox, an Aussie crime writer, as his co-author. This was a smart move by Patterson which greatly enhanced the atmosphere and setting of the novel. Definitely gave the book a feel for Australia...in fact, in some cases, I had to look up some Australian phases to get their full meaning.

As far as the story itself, it was typical of other Private novels but with only two storylines rather than the usual 3 or 4. The first was about a scam involving surrogacy and a woman who is murdered because of this which also resulted in the abduction of a baby. The second and main case involves the missing CEO of a high-profile research company who turns out to be somewhat of a ghost...he has no identity and high powers within the government are trying to make sure he stays missing. Craig Gisto, the head of Private Sydney becomes involved with the missing man's daughter and stays committed to finding out what happened to him and how he may be involved in international espionage.

Overall, a satisfying story although not quite as much action and violence as in other Patterson thrillers. I did especially enjoy the Australian setting and would give this a mild recommendation.
