From book jacket: Crelly Kemp is a gifted, beautiful young actress. But she is shy and insecure, tortured by a secret past. All that changes when she meets John Werner, a brilliant mathematician from a wealthy family. Crelly is dazzled by John; she blossoms under his care. Their wedding is the happiest of moments, and if love could heal all wounds their happiness would know no bounds. But their marriage is haunted, threatened by dark figures from the past. John's mother, possessive and deeply neurotic, despises Crelly and her poor rural background. Crelly's brother Gene, a rough, uneducated man, envies Crelly her luck and money. And it is Gene who nearly destroys them. Gene has been horribly twisted by the childhood Crelly escaped, and Crelly's new happiness drives him into a burning rage. As he seeks his revenge, it is Gene who finally reveals the black truth about an old man addicted to cheap chocolates and young boys, about an unmarked grave on a Maine hillside.
