Alice Sebold hooked me with her first paragraph, the penguin snow globe, and didn't let me go until the end. I can look back and remember that I skipped and skimmed bad descriptions but was never tempted to put the book down. I'm a fan of murder mysteries and thrillers so I didn't find the initial violence gory or difficult to read.
Plenty of people wonder what the dead would say to them if they could give advice. Some also wonder if the dead have a hard time letting go, especially victims of violent crimes. I believe Alice Sebold shows every characters reaction to Suzie's death in an accurate, realistic way, including the much argued about ending which I won't spoil here.
This is truly a story of family and how they deal with and move through their grief over losing a loved one way too soon. I hope you enjoy this book.
